Supplement to “identifying Social Interactions through Conditional Variance Restrictions: Additional Empirical Results, Specification Tests, and Power Calculations

چکیده
SINCE THE ESTIMATOR PROPOSED in the paper is based on a simple conditional moment restriction, standard approaches to specification testing are available (e.g., the Sargan–Hansen test of overidentifying restrictions). However, as in any application, it is helpful to think about specific directions of misspecification and to construct tests accordingly. As an example, note that an implication of Assumption 1.2 (as stated in the paper) is that class size/type and teacher characteristics are ‘stochastically separable’ in the production of academic achievement. This appendix outlines a test for this assumption. Assume that teachers have L latent attributes ac = (ac1 acL)′ Conditional random assignment ensures that

Understanding Regression versus Variance Tests for Social Interactions
This article is designed to understand the relationship between two approaches to the empirical analysis of social interactions. The first approach is the use of linear regressions to uncover social interactions. This approach estimates social interaction effects through changes in the conditional (linear) expectation of individual outcomes when group-level variables are included in the conditi...
متن کاملEfficient information theoretic inference for conditional moment restrictions
The generalized method of moments estimator may be substantially biased in finite samples, especially so when there are large numbers of unconditional moment conditions. This paper develops a class of first order equivalent semi-parametric efficient estimators and tests for conditional moment restrictions models based on a local or kernel-weighted version of the Cressie-Read power divergence fa...
متن کاملAdditional Moment Condition Tests ∗
The primary focus of this article is the provision of tests for additional conditional moment constraints in cross-section or short panel data contexts. The principal contribution is the explicit incorporation of conditional moment restrictions defining the maintained hypothesis in the formulation of the test statistics thus mirroring that of the classical parametric likelihood setting by defin...
متن کاملTesting for Nonnested Conditional Moment Restrictions via Conditional Empirical Likelihood
We propose non-nested tests for competing conditional moment resctriction models using a method of empirical likelihood. Our tests are based on the method of conditional empirical likelihood developed by Kitamura, Tripathi and Ahn (2004) and Zhang and Gijbels (2003). By using the conditional implied probabilities, we develop three non-nested tests: the moment encompassing, Cox-type, and effcien...
متن کاملTESTING FOR NON-NESTED CONDITIONAL MOMENT RESTRICTIONS USING UNCONDITIONAL EMPIRICAL LIKELIHOOD By
We propose non-nested hypotheses tests for conditional moment restriction models based on the method of generalized empirical likelihood (GEL). By utilizing the implied GEL probabilities from a sequence of unconditional moment restrictions that contains equivalent information of the conditional moment restrictions, we construct Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Cramér-von Mises type moment encompassing te...
